Struggling with the final VAM, nice die crack on the reverse at 10:00, broken 4th star on right of obverse. Any help with grading and VAMing would be greatly appreciated!

Looks more like a 61 to me. Lots of chatter and bag marks. At least it looks original with no hints of cleaning or dipping.

AU55, coin has seen definite circulation, reverse left side shows wear to lettering, fields have lots of friction rub and hairlines, wear on breast feathers, tops of leaves, and inner wings. VAM-wise, these are nearly impossible to VAM without the coin in hand or 10x shots of the key VAM PUP's for 1878 7TF common broken-4th-star VAMs. Nothing jumps out at me right away.

with AU-55, the wear is slight but certainly there. Too bad about all the marks on the obverse, but it has some nice luster for the grade!

Pretty severely beat up either way - high AU or very low MS.

I agree it is a little rough but for $24 it wasn't much of a choice. I was thinking it was a 62 but even at a 58 slider, I'm in really good shape! Any areas with a loop which might be needed to help with the VAM?

Agree, $24 was a great price.

It is not a third reverse. If the O in GOD is open, then it is a B2b reverse. If not it is a B2a. The keys to identifying B2 reverses are the R in Trust, the O in God, and the D in Dollar ... all on the reverse. The broken 4th right star on the obverse and die crack through the D in UNITED on the reverse will help you narrow it down. I would need close-ups of these PUPs to help.
Good luck.

Slider. Gut feel is low mint state MS-61 or MS-62 but may grade AU-58 if closer inspection shows some wear on the high points.
