My older daughter found this in our rental car a few weeks ago. Rental car! At first I was amazed at the fact that it was 1982 and red and seemingly uncirculated. In a rental car. Then I looked at it closely and saw the measles. Was it plated by somebody? Investigated further. Not being much into modern US, I had no idea about the 7 varieties of 1982 and how horrible the plating was on the zinc. Then I read up further on how to tell the difference between zinc and bronze just by the tone. So my younger daughter came in, 11 years old, while I was testing this, asked me what I was doing, I explained, and gave a demo. Hear that subtle ring on the copper ones? Then we pulled out the change jar and went through the cents, dropping each on my desk. Dang if she didn't pick out every single copper cent that was in the change jar, just by listening to it.

You shouldn't drop coins....

Every time a coin drops, damage to it occurs.

We're not talking valuable coins here. Anything found in a rental car or someone's change jar has already gotten a ding or two, so drop 'em. And I'd be surprised if you could damage a coin by dropping it two inches onto a wooden desk. Now when it falls onto the floor and gets run over by the vacuum cleaner or your rolling chair, then, yeah.

That's a pretty good-looking 82, kbbpll! Nice story, too.

Mint state 82LDZ, 34 YO coin.....NICE FIND!

This was the first year for copper plated zinc cents, bubbling is the norm since the Mint was learning.

Here's the best one I've been able to find in many years of looking:

Funny thing is one of the coppers my daughter identified out of the change jar is a 1982D. Still mostly red as well, but lightly circulated. So I got the last copper and the first zinc this week! Not that I was looking for them. :)

Nice one, BadThad.
