I went to the bank to cash in $500 of halves. I was near a branch that has a self service coin machine. It broke in the middle of my money, so the head teller came out and was fixing it. Another teller came out and said "Some other branch just called and asked if they could send a large check here."
The head teller replied "No, we don't have any money."
When I finally got done, I cashed my receipt in and asked the teller for $2s. As she was counting out a stack of them, I saw her slip a red seal back into her drawer. Dang it!
Then I was at Costco paying for $85 dollars in groceries with $2 bills. The cashier stopped in the middle of counting them, looked up at me with a funny look on his face and said "You're not the one that came through here last week and paid with all of those half dollars, are you!?!"
"Yes sir, I'm all about unusual currency!"

Sorry to hear about that $2 bill. I never had the nerve to spend one. Although I get plenty of looks when I spend the Presidential dollars. Some look at me surprised and others look annoyed.

why not just ask for it from the teller? Most of the time they don't like holding on to them

I think if the teller put it back in the drawer in the middle of counting then she knew what it was and has a collector in the family or is one themself, if they put it in the drawer after counting I would have asked for it

If one of the teller is collecting or has a collector in her family, then that branch is useless to the rest of us. There should be a way to mark the branch with a warning sign or something.
I once was at this branch buying half dollar. The teller dealing with me had $7.5 halves. While she was counting the halves to me, the driving window teller setting right behind her turned around and handed to her a coin (maybe a quarter or dime) and said "hey, here is a silver one". She immediately put it in a small box inside her drawer. From that moment I knew that I would never find any silver at that branch and avoid that branch as a skunk.

Hehe, I always love when other coin collectors come in to the bank. I always am tempted to tell them to not bother looking threw all that coin cause I already went threw it all. I put things back in my drawer all the time when I see it. But I am over at the drive thur so customers dont see what it is I have. When my teller supervisor has to audit my drawer she always complains about it. I always have things in little piles I wanna buy. LoL half the time I have more money in my drawer I want to buy than I do that I can give out. quote: Another teller came out and said "Some other branch just called and asked if they could send a large check here."
The head teller replied "No, we don't have any money."
This happens all the time now. With all the robberies going on lately and banks trying to save money, we dont carry any money. At times I amost worry more about getting robbed when we have no money. Some robber could really get ticked off if you give him all you got and you give him a whole 500$. LoL unless they are a coin collector then I could give them more in coin.

Yes, I asked for all the two they had, and she gave them all to me, except the red seal. I've found a few banks that I know I'll never find anything at:
I had one bank where I asked for halves and the teller walked over to another and said "Oh, you have halves." The other teller said "No I don't!"
Another bank I asked for halves and the teller said that she had two rolls of halves I could buy. Another teller leaned over and said "Not THAT roll." "NO, just these two rolls."
There's another bank I go to where the teller handed me a 1964 half and said "there's a silver one, its worth about $5." At that same bank I bought some twos and a different teller sold me a bunch of twos and handed me a red seal and said "there's a really old one"
The funniest was when I went to a bank and asked for halves. The teller held one up and said "Are those half dollars?"

On the other end, there are banks I want to check out at least once every month:
At one bank, a young teller (18-20 yrs old) sold me 7 rolls of halves and he said to me at the end "have fun! The silver content is very high in those". I got 64 40% and 1 90% out of $70 batch. That is a whopping 46% of silver coins! He must've looked and he still sold to me. So I know that he doesn't care much about the silver and definitely not a collector. I sure will check out again once a while and hopfully befriend him.

That is a bad sign when the teller has to ask if if a coin is a half. Its dangerous to have money in your drawer and not know what its worth.

Here's what I do when I know that there is a "coin collector" working at the bank....... I slip by there at about midnight and mark the side of the building with a big swath arc of Neon YELLOW paint ! Every once in a while they'll clean it off....but they get tired of doing that after awhile and it'll be left there. I maintain this at 4 different banks here in my town and 6 different banks in outlying towns. This alerts me, family, and my friends and friends of friends as to the "low prospect" of finding ANYTHING at these "marked" banks.......from what I understand this has started a groundswell in my state.....and so if we could make this happen in every county and state in the country.......OHHH ! Wouldn't it be great ! If everyone will participate......this will work in your state too.....let me know.......

Whoa, I got a red seal 1963 $2 from my bank, along with two gently used 1976's and a bunch of nice 2003's from the same series. I got about 25 bills in a row of the same series, it was cool.
Oh, yeah, is the red seal worth anything? or is it just neat and special?
