Here's a raw IHC I bought as mint state. I liked it because of its striking iridescent blue patina. Unfortunately my photos don't capture the color. Do our graders agree it is mint state, or was I perhaps taken in by a nice AU? What grade would you assign? Edited by Jaobler 03/25/2008 01:16 am

Not a good enough picture to tell. Does the luster flow over Liberty's cheek on obverse and the ribbon on the reverse? If so, it's MS.

I would guess low end MS w/ a weak strike.

The picture has some blurr to it so I can't quite be sure, although it does not appear to have any wear on the high points. examine the lower hair curl and hair just above the ear very closely as they will show wear most readily. Also check the ribbon over the arrows on the reverse. the feathers appear to be weakly struck. Nice problem free coin overall.

Here are a couple more photos. The obverse looks more lustrous that the reverse, but both sides have substantial luster with no obvious breaks. This obverse shot provides better detail for the feathers and diamonds, plus the color shows a bit better. When I first saw this coin I thought it might be a toned Proof since the obverse has nice reflectivity. However, the denticles (among other details) don't look sharp enough for a proof.

This is way out of my comfort zone, but I'm going to stretch and call it MS. There are little details on the wreath I would expect to see worn which aren't, and the scratches on the cheek are in a place that I think would be about the first place to show wear. If handled, I don't think those scratches would be so sharp.

Much better pics! MS62-BN IMO, Feather tips weak and mark below eye prevents a higher grade. Nice original color & toning. It's definitely a keeper!

I think it is a very very nice high-end AU coin, but not MS. There is light wear on the feathers that prevent it from being uncirculated. AU58 slider.

I'll go with MS-62 , I think the cheek scratches will keep it there. I don't think the lack of detail on the feather tips at the top is wear- and the corresponding weak spot on the reverse wreath bow lead me to believe it is not wear, just a weak strike. A nice looking coin either way !
