Seems somewhat similar to some denars from the Regensburg mint (Germany). Spence may provide some guidance soon...

Thanks for the vote of confidence Bob!

@panic, that is a sweet little denar that you have there, despite the damage from the mount and the wrinkled flan. I can't find an exact match so I will offer you a couple possibilities based on the pics that you have already supplied.

1. It could be a denar from 11th or 12th century Regensburg Germany. Certainly there are some with various combinations of wedges, annulets, and dots in the quarters of the cross and a church building on the rev. It is always dangerous to bet against Bob when identifying coins and so this could very well be what you have.

2. Another possibility is that it is early feudal France, perhaps from Normandy or Tours. This would be roughly the same date range as above.

Perhaps the most satisfying option would be for you to post better pics (ditch that Euro, nice and tight just on this coin, well-lit, facing the right-side up, and in focus over the entire coin). There is a whole section here on CCF that has best practices for coin photography. It would be so much easier if I could get more of the inscription. Right now, all I have is C V * S H?N? on the obv and + P A I on the rev.

Hi, I try to make better pictures. Can I clean it up little and flatten or is it damage my coin?

I wouldn't try to flatten it, sometimes such old silver is brittle and will snap. If you do try to clean it don't use anything harsh, soap and water and some cotton wool perhaps.

An intetesting coin but not my area...

The raised section is interesting, is this something metal fused with the coin or a mineral deposit or what?

Very nice job with the new pics. Some of the lettering is quite crude (for example that letter C). I will see what I can find.

@panic, ok I am ready to cry uncle. I cannot find you coin in my reference books. From my onlnkie searching, my best guess is that Bob got it right initially, and it is from around the year 1000 AD and minted in Regensburg. The distinctive shape of that letter C and the building seem to be pointing in that direction.

I don't know if this is allowed, so the mods may remove it, but here is a link to Arie Marinus van Herwijnen's website called "Bona Tiele". He has strong interest in this narrow area of numismatics, although perhaps a bit more on the Dutch side than the German side: http://www.bonatiele.nl You could potentially contact him about an attribution. If you decide to try that and get an answer, please post your results here on CCF. I've now spent quite a bit of time chasing an attribution for this little guy and would love to know more about him!
