These coins will get more complicated as I learn the basics of error coins. This one looks like a broadstrike by definition, but has some shape characteristics. First, it is asymmetrically off-round, which I suspect is just part of getting minted without a collar. But the obverse is slightly convex, tapering a bit more steeply near the rim, while the reverse is just very slightly concave across the details with a distinct breakpoint creating a very cup-like shape. Weight is 2.55g and diameter is 22.6mm varying slightly depending on location. Lots of zinc visible, so I am thinking hard about Mox's comment on getting these in air tight holders. Problem is they are all different diameters! As always, I appreciate comments.   |

Put them in a larger holder. Figure out what size is comparable and and use that size of holder. A quick way to measure that is with a 2X2. That would tell you what size you need. That is really a super nice example, too. If you have a caliper it's easy to measure, or as Coop suggests, find out which 2x2 works best. I'm guessing slightly bigger than a nickel.

Thanks for the comments! I've now got off center (is that one word, two words, or hyphenated?), uncentered broadstrike and centered broadstrike sorta figured out thanks to all your help. As for the holders, I do have very exact calipers so could figure out holders that would be the closest fit. Probably just have to buy a selection of sizes and fit them in on a one-by-one basis, though, as I have quite a few, and some are by no means round.

According to the website http://www.error-ref.com/broadstrike-cupped/ (provided by John1, thanks!) this looks like a form of centered broadstrike called a cupped broadstrike. Most cupping is supposed to be toward the obverse, while this is toward the reverse, so maybe a bit unusual. |
