As the title states, I bought a counterfeit coin today. Not just any counterfeit, a really nice one. It's a 1925 California Diamond Jubilee half dollar. It has a nice reeded wdge, fantastic luster and nice detail. I knew it was fake when I bought it. So why did I buy it? I was looking to contribute to the educational aspect of detecting well made fakes. I also wanted to ensure safe disposal of the coin so someone else should nit get cheated. Does anyone here on the forum have a use for such an item. Please understand that I will not send this to anyone that does not get the full recommendation by the other members here. Hiw much did I shell out you ask- $5. That's the extent of my contribution to society. Here are thw pics. You may be wondering how I can be so sure that it is fake. The weight is of by approximately a gram and under magnification(and probably to a trained naked eye) there are bubbles, or grainy texture. If you are interested let me know. I cant figure how to allow email, but I will message anyone who wants me to.

The key question is whether it's a contemporary counterfeit (which might be educational and collectable) or a modern piece of garbage?

Check out the black cabinet
Awesome site for counterfeits. You might want to donate it there if there is not one already.

I never knew about The Black Cabinet. I wandered around there for awhile and they don't have an example of this commemorative coin so I am sure it would be a welcome addition.

Probably in the minority here but when we are recommending sites to buy fake coins then we are the reason they are in existence and doing harm to the Coin World. I would never consider purchasing any known counterfeit coin Just my opinion....

Quote:Probably in the minority here but when we are recommending sites to buy fake coins then we are the reason they are in existence and doing harm to the Coin World. Just to clarify... The "Black Cabinet" web site is not a place to buy/sell counterfeit coins. From the site: "The Black Cabinet is a database and reference library of counterfeit American coinage currently in circulation. Its purpose is to educate coin collectors and the general public about counterfeits and their impact upon the hobby."The site provides a great service in helping to educate collectors and help them identify counterfeits so as not to make potentially costly mistakes in purchasing coins for their collection. It is well worth spending some time browsing the site. The Black Cabinet

Thanks for that clarification...but I would still never intentionally buy a fake coin and legitimize the process.

I agree Fox, I too refuse to buy any counterfeits even for educational purposes.

Is Steve Caruso still maintaining the Black Cabinet? I see the website hasn't been updated for a year and a half and he hasn't been here for almost as long?
I'm with Foxwoods on not buying a fake coin intentionally. If all of us were to go out and buy fakes to make our own black cabinets then that would expand the market and increase incentive for better quality fakes.

I .. alas ... have one just like this ... and it cost me a lot more $ during my learning years. There is a tremendous increase in counterfeit classic silver commemorative out there ... any quick check of ebay will find several examples in the first few hundred listings. The only defense we have is education ... and hope that the next generation of collectors will not be fooled. David
