I picked this up raw for $20. How would you grade it? I took the picture through the 2x2. I see no issues with this coin.

VF-20, and it is an N-1 (Newcomb-1) based on the 1 and 8. Looks like a nice, no problem coin, and it is an R1.

Nice no problem VF-20. Usually by the time an LC circulated long enough to get down to this grade they have plenty of marks, hits, and rim dings.
Yours is a happy exception. Congratulations on a nice example.

I'm at VF25 due to the eye appeal of this coin. I think it would make A-grade within the grade. Very nice.

 with the above & a great pickup at the price. 1840-1845 are quite difficult to find in mid grades without major issues.
