I'm going to an auction this weekend (actually for something else maybe) and this is up for auction but if the price is right I might jump on this as well and wanted your thoughts... What would the max bid you would be willing to put on it if you were going to bid? In your opinion, would do you think its approximate value is?

Heritage Auctions has sold a couple from this bank in the last year or so. One brought around 180$, While the other brought just over 100$.
If I were bidding I wouldn't go over 100$. Value to me would be somewhere around 75$
Good luck!

Don Kelly's Sixth Edition of Natonal Bank Notes gives it a value of $750, in average circulated condition.

There may be a local history person willing to duke it out with anyone interested in this note. Just because the two sold by Heritage sold for between $100 and $180 doesn't mean this one will.
It all depends on the crowd and whether there is a local history buff present willing to 'buy it at any price'.
Good luck and report back how the auction went.

Tell us why this appeals to you or your friend, since I'm guessing you are not a paper money collector.

Quote: Tell us why this appeals to you or your friend, since I'm guessing you are not a paper money collector. Don't know if this question was for me or not but if it is then the only reason I would want to buy it is I like old style money better than anything in modern times... I generally don't collect much paper money with mostly collecting Star notes and only out of the wild to put back... As far as the town it means nothing to me as I have been there once (years ago)... Also, I don't have a friend involved in any of this so I don't know where you got that from... I am actually going for some antique Eastlake tables but if for some reason I do not go for those, then I might be willing to part some money for this bill...

Well I went up to where this auction is taking place to take a look around and did not know all the other coins and currency that is being auction... This bill was not there yet (tomorrow) but I'll see it on Sunday... One of the guys who is part of the auction asked me how much it was worth and I told him I didn't know I just thought it was a cool looking note... The only problem is that they are having multiple auctions going on at the same time and they are other things I am interested in... But I have been to a few of their auctions and they will hold off or work with you if you are interested in something... I would guess VG.
Not many large size notes known on this bank, but then that is true of many smaller banks.
Good luck!

The Kelly Book is a great reference for qty printed and other basic information. His book prices are way out of line with today's soft National market (in most cases). Anyone paying $750 (Kelly Book) for this note either has too much money or is desperate to own one from that bank.
If you are a Buyer, real world auction records are your best reference as to what to pay for a note. As always, if you go against someone that is related to one of the signers, or is from that town, auction records and the Kelly Book don't mean diddly squat.

Quote: or is from that town Well the fact that town is in the same county and just down the road a few miles from where this auction is taking place so I'm sure there will be quite a few people from there attending... My only issue is that there will be two auction (maybe three) rings going on since there are several estate auctions taking place... One is ring is full of antiques from one estate and there is another ring for coins, knives, etc... The last one (if there is three) is for the 300 fishing reels they have...

westernsky - Well said. Prices for NBNs are primarily influenced by personal, local and geographic factors, rather than, essentially, the condition level that determines the price of general issues. A fascinating aspect of PM collection vs. coin collecting.

I've been after a few Nationals for decades and I've finally given up on requiring highest grade possible. Regardless of book value there is just too many people after the small locations that keep even low grade examples much higher than I'd expect.

Agree completely. NBNs are the province of true collectors rather than investors for the most part.
