At our family Christmas gathering this year, my aunt came up with an old box that she got from my grandfather's house when he passed away in the 1990s. It's apparently just been sitting around in a closet somewhere. In this box, there was a set of coins. It seems he had a small collection of coins (possibly from his travels while in the armed services), ranging from some Nazi coins to a "coin" with a sexually suggestive image on it (no, I'm not joking -- it's not currency, but probably some sort of token from somewhere). These coins range from the 1920s to probably something like the 1960s. We were all very curious about the whole thing, so I decided to take the lead on trying to sort it out. There are maybe a few dozen coins. (I'm traveling, and won't really sit down with them until I'm back home.) This isn't really about trying to sell them to make money, but just to learn some history. (I'm not a collector or a history buff.) They were all just loose coins and not stored in a way that indicates that he was a careful collector. But it was clearly a box of coins that he had collected. I'm doubtful that any of this is particularly rare or special, but I won't know until I go through it. In the event that there's something interesting here, I wanted to at least try to find some people who can give me some basic tips from people who are interested in this stuff about moving forward. For example, my first instinct was to try to clean up the coins a bit, but a brief search yielded a very clear warning against cleaning coins. http://coins.about.com/od/caringfor...eancoins.htmSo rather than potentially screw things up, here I am as a total dunce looking for any guidance at all. This forum appeared to be sufficiently busy that I'm optimistic that I'll get some good advice relatively quickly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me.

you can post coins in the correct sections by country to get info about them.

AWong! Yes, there are multiple sections here, so depending on what you have questions about there are proper places for US Classic & Modern coins, Canadian coins, Australian coins, World coins and Unidentified coins, etc. I'm positive you will get quick, knowledgeable answers for the questions you may have.

to the CCF, AWong! What we need most to tell you about your coins are pictures, obverse (heads and reverse (tails). If you're good with you phone camera, that's fine. Try to get the well lit with the extraneous material cropped out. My grandfather was in the ETO with the army and so your collection is very much like mine with an English penny, some Nazi garbage, and maybe a 18th century silver 5 francs. So, take some pics and post them!

Welcome to the forum, I think you will find a lot of good info here, and a lot of helpful people.
However, its extremely tough for us to help you with no idea of what coins you have.
I would suggest the following (there is a bit of work involved with this):
first you need to separate the coins into countries, and then by decades (if you are not sure what the country is then maybe lump these all together)
in your other post you said the bag was smelly, I would suggest removing the coins from this bag and get a new ziplock bag which would be safe for the coins.
Next you need to either research online which coins you have your self or take clear pictures of both sides of the coins and then upload them here and we will try and help you out.

Thanks for the welcomes! I hope to spend some time going through them in the next couple weeks. It was a brand new bag before the coins went in. http://goccf.com/t/276747#2344865

I agree about the pics. I'd like to see them too. I had a similar experience, getting a stash of coins from my late grandfather, and having to go through them and learn about them to get an idea of value. You're in for a fun time!!
