I am looking into purchasing a Barber half dollar in mint state condition. What should I be expecting to pay for an average date?

the price can vary greatly depending on the date and mint mark. Check the general price on online retailers and completed ebay auctions. The range online I see is from $895 to $5,995

Give us some help. What grade do you want? I assume you know this is a Coin that is a must purchase in TPG?

The coin is definitely going to be graded. I was thinking around MS-60 to MS-61.

I'd recommend looking at au58 coins. Low ms coins can have lots of distracting marks. Whereas a nice au58 coin can be attractive with nice luster and only a touch of wear.

Oftentimes an AU55-58 is much more attractive than a much more expensive low MS coin.

Barber halves are expensive in mint state cause they're scarce and cause the halves did a lot of circulation. You ever wonder why most you find are AG to VG normally.

I agree with what others have posted above about recommended grades -- low MS coins often have distracting marks, so going AU55-AU58 or MS63 makes sense depending on your budget. I wanted a nice Barber half for my type collection for many years, and finally pulled the trigger in September 2016 when I purchased a PCGS MS63, dated 1900. I bought directly from a reputable dealer I had purchased from before, and who had always treated me well. Total cost was $850, $50 below the PCGS price guide. I spent a lot of time searching using ebay, Heritage, Collectors Corner, etc., and decided this was a very fair price for the coin.

Thank you guys for the replies. I think I will go with an almost uncirculated piece.

There are a lot of lower end MS Halves being auctioned off at HA.com ( Heritage ). I use them quite a bit and consign to them frequently. At the moment, I am not selling any of my MS Halves. I have consigned three to four dozen nice XF/AU's.
Good luck.

Yes, good luck, and if you're going for AU then choose a slabbed 58 and be patient!

I have seen some very nice XF Barbers at the last 2 coin shows. MS examples were 800+
