So how are these notes disposed of?

Do they burn/melt them?

Are they recyclable?

I cannot imagine there would be much left if they were burned/melted. I also am curious if they end up in landfills (shredded I would think)?

Used banknotes, not shredded, in a landfill! Can you imagine if that happened and the news got out?

Yes, they're recycled. Here in Australia (using polymer notes since the 1990s) they're shredded, pelleted and recycled into low-grade plastic products - plumbing pipes, outdoor furniture, the sort of thing they usually make out of recycled mixed plastic.

Here's the Reserve Bank of Australia page on the subject.

Thanks Sap - this makes the notion of these an even better idea since they are recycled into useful products.
