The hardest coin for me to find for my set is the 1885-cc in XF40/XF45. Ideally I didn't want to do the grading submission game but the PCGS pop is so low. Why not save a few hundred more and get one in MS or even AU58. They look so much better. I got 1890CC and 1891CC in AU58 and they were so close to MS60, but much less in cost. The 89CC and 93CC's do cause pain even in EF but the 85CC is not that much more in EF than in MS60.

I understand what you are saying about cost and the small difference in some of the grades. I thought it would be more challenging and consistent to have the entire set in a very small grade spread. I go back and forth on this.

Tough call. I can see it having good chance at XF40
There are a couple spots that have my attention.
The hair just above the brow and in the ear area.
The spots might be some PVC.
I think this coin has a layer that coins pick up,
hate to call it grime.
Acetone or Verdi-care might take it off ...
But you never know what it looks like under.
Sometime removing those spots that look like PVC
and the layer of grime, will leave you with a
cleaned looking coin.

Thank you for all of the input. I think I will just pass on this one. I don't want to take the financial risk it will not grade where I need it to.
I am also thinking maybe I should shift my set quality focus from XF40/XF45 to XF45/AU55. That's still a very tight spread and gives me more options on the 1885cc from a population perspective since I only want to buy a PCGS graded one. This also addresses the minimal value difference in some of the grades.

The 1885-CC dollar is very scarce in the circulated grades. When I was a dealer I looked long and hard to find one in EF or AU that did not have problems for a customer. I am not 100% sure that is coin is genuine. It does not look like most Chinese fakes, but it bears a resemblance. The color and pitted surfaces bother me. Most circulated Morgan dollars don't have that look. As for "matched sets" do that for your own enjoyment, but don't get idea that anyone will share you enthusiasm when comes time sell. Most collections are broken up and sold as single pieces. The current bid is "all the money" in my opinion. There must be more collectors out there who are like you in search of this date and mint that is hard to find in the circulated grades. |

I am with Bill on this coin as it may not be genuine at all.
It looks very "funny" and the date doesn't look right to me.
Ask yourself: WHY is this coin not in a slab? Better still...ask the SELLER!

It's good that you passed on that coin. Keeping your range from 50-58 might be even better. Look at the price differences and you can see pretty small spreads in those grades for the CC.

I was trying to keep my set at AU and above but I can't afford to do that and have a bank account. There are at least ten coins that just blow that theory to heck.

Speaking of VAM, the coin shows date position being a 'far date'. There is no far date variety for 85cc. So I also agreed with others that this coin is not genuine. |

Thank you for all of the valuable input. Definitely passed on the coin and did some further research on the grade spread for collecting higher grade circulated CC Morgans. These are PCGS populations and prices so it gives the general idea on price and scarcity. The 1880 to 1885 are pretty scarce in XF45 to AU55. No total populations above 100 for any year.
XF45-AU55 CC Morgans
1878cc XF45-AU55 $180-$220. No population problems.
1879cc XF45-$1200. No population problems.
1880cc XF45-AU55 $305-340. Population is 69 total for grade spread.
1881cc XF45-AU55 $495-$500. Population is 41 total for grade spread.
1882cc XF45-AU55 $165-$190. Population is 97 total for grade spread.
1883cc XF45-AU55 $160-$175. Population is 57 total for grade spread.
1884cc XF45-AU55 $205-$210. Population is 61 total for grade spread.
1885cc XF45-AU55 $625-$635. Population is 45 total for grade spread.
1889cc XF45 $Expensive! No populations problems.
1890cc XF45-AU55 $195-$260. No population problems.
1891cc XF45-AU55 $210-$275. No population problems.
1892cc XF45-AU55 $625-$900. No population problems.
1893xx XF45 $1400. No population problems.
So I am thinking I will put together the following set in XF45 to AU55. Still a tight grade spread but gives me some more options in pursuing coins with nice eye appeal.

When first looking at the coin it just looked off. especially the date, so I would buy a certified example.

It's a fake. The configuration of the date digits are wrong, most noticeably the 5. And I agree with AU90, no far date position for '85-CC.

The more I look at this coin the more convinced I am that it is NOT a genuine 1885-CC.
The date layout and font is just not right.
