I don't have any info on that Don. It just reminded me of the 1881-H spur N large cent. Somebody that's been around here a lot longer than me may be able to find a Griffin # for you. I don't even have any of the Griffin books.

The reverse "O" in ONE also has a different or doubled look in the above pic. ____________
In my 2nd Edition,..Monograph 1 of the Jack Griffin book, he only mentions the date spacing and the V in Victoria with no mention of our present discussion.
Very little info in the Griffin text on the 1871 PEI cent.

Hi Don I think both your coins are the same obverse and believe them to be GR-901g but I'm not sure about the date spacing the write up reads from Griffins book. GR-901g, 8+7 quite close, 7+1 very wide. The date is closer to the beads. The V is recut with slim side, and there is a slim left side to the A. The T is recut, as well as the left top of the R, and the Q of Queen. Rarity 3. This is the only coin that has the V,T,R,A and the Q mentioned together that are recut on the same obverse. The reverse Griffin doesn't mention much on them but I have noticed that spurred N on some coins but not lots nice find I can't see the E very well but it might a clogged die like some of the letters on the 59's I'm not sure

well it has been a few months that I have been searching for this variety since its discovery. I have searched every coin show coin store flea market and online auction and still have not seen any more than the 2 that papeldog and myself have, and I am sure I have looked at several hundreds by now. I'm starting to think it might be quite scarce

They do seem to be fairly scarce alright I think I may have found another one in EF condition but the picture provided was very small and hard to make out it seemed the more I blew the picture up the more blurred that area became. It should be here in a few days if it is one I'll post picture's but I have been fooled many times with variety coins here's hoping it is. Happy Hunting

You can make that #3. Recently acquired on ebay. Looked at about 100 PEIs. My feeling is that the scarcity of this variety is a Sheldon R4. The other 1871 PEI 1c variety (O/O in ONE) is more common. I'd put it at R2 or R3 (probably R3). That one seems plentiful in MS.

Here is another one with the re-punched O. The smudge is on the holder. The coin is in the bank vault, so I am not sure if it is the same reverse die as Don's, but it probably is.
