Quote: Do the red coins stay red, & if not what can be done to best preserve their redness? ^ for attribution. I've been curious about this as well. I understand there may be a study out there regarding redness change in TPG holders. If so, does anyone know where it was published? If not, I am interested in doing an experiment. I have an environmental chamber that is regulated at 40C 75% relative humidity which is like Florida summer weather and I would like to put some red cents raw, in flips, 2x2s, in NGC holders, and PCGS holders in there for a period of time and take really good pictures over time. I think the results would be very interesting and publishable, if it hasn't been properly done before. I'd hope to not have to spend a lot of money on slabbed cents as anything pre-1982 would work just fine. Any ideas on how to get the coins would be appreciated as well as any comments on the experimental design. Anyone that wants to donate coins to the cause, I'll acknowledge you here and on anything that may get written. Edited by Andrew99 01/11/2017 2:10 pm

This is an interesting project. It would be good to get some hard information. I suggest as one possibility to go to LCS or local shows and look for anything red in the discount boxes.

Also, I suggest you pick up a copper proof, possibly a PF 69 Birth and Childhood 2009 cent. The NGC ones are only like $10.

I have a roll of Gem Proof 1963s as I break open a lot of Proof sets. Its the slabbed ones I'll need help with. If I can get moderns slabbed for $10 a piece, I'll just do it myself.

I say do both 75% humidity and 90%, use mylar and pvc flips, and include ANACS and maybe IC(an't)G(rade).

And perhaps capsules and paper envelopes...

What could take years, finding the coins or them turning? 40C/75RH is really hot and humid. If I don't see something happening in a few months even in TPG holders, I'd be surprised.

Coin197, 90% RH is really hard to maintain. 100% is relatively easy, but needs to be done in a small box. Also, those are not realistic environments even if you live in Tampa or Baton Rouge. I have a really big stability chamber at 40C75RH that is mostly empty. Adding a couple other TPGs won't add much space and time. Kointains is a good idea, I have some.

I'm interested to see what happens. I would expect TPG slabs, at least PCGS and NGC, to protect the surfaces fairly well. It would be somewhat pointless to grade a coin as red if it could oxidize within a few years.

update: I have all the coins I need. I'm just using lincoln cents. I have raw BU and Proof in flips, 2x2, ANACS, PCGS, and NGC. Most of them are pre-82, but I have a couple of near perfect modern proofs in PCGS courtesy of CCF member nfine. The photographic setup was constructed by CCF member rmpsrpms and I'm learning how to use it. As subtle shifts to brown may be the effect, it is important to have good starting images with true color for comparison. I expect to set the study in a cardboard slab holder box at 40C/75RH and pull at 1 month and 3 months for photos. I can continue it every three months after that if needed.
