Hey,

So I've collected quite a bit of the us type coins, and have many. I don't have a 7070 but I have many varieties that the book has. I'm missing some like the Seated Liberty dollar, flowing hair dollar, ect.

For the next few months I want to buy 1-2 coins a month. I was considering either one classic silver commemorative or some of the gold coins from older US times. My question is my max spend would be like 450; what gold coins would I be able to get, slabbed? I don't care so much about MS vs AU but more one of each type.

I know in general the silver commemorative ones would be easier. What are your thoughts?
Rest in Peace

You can get all but a few of the classic silver commemoratives for your buy level if you are willing to stay at or below the 64 line, and many will be far less than your maximum comfortable spending level.

With few exceptions CSC are just plain cheap right now, especially at the MS-66 grade for many issues. You do need patience because many TPG coins might fit the technical grade but still have ugly toning or spots.

Look for pretty coins. With gold you can't touch any Eagles or Double Eagles in that price range.

Good advice. You could, of course, save for 2-3 months and get an Eagle or Double Eagle and then revert to the smaller denominations later.

What would be your goals in either case - a full CSC type set versus both Liberty and St. Gaudens/Indian type sets, for example?

Tell us more.

For 450 you can pick up many scarce date quarter eagles.

UNC Seated coins are also very nice.

CSC in UNC are priced low enough that you can buy two of them in your $450 budget.

I currently am working on a low ms gold type set. I have been working on it for 7 months. Big ticket coins in ms that'll be expensive are gold dollar type 2, $3 gold....those 2 will cost between $1K and 3K a pop. I'm currently looking for a nice ms62 $5 gold Indian, greysheet listing is $500 they're selling for $600-$700. It's a lot of looking for the right coin and striking when you see the perfect coin and price.

Sometime this weekend I will post my gold type set in progress.

I agree, you would be able to get anything under a half eagle. Good luck!

Why are Liberty Half Eagles cheaper than the Indian head ones?

Scarcity. Here's the problem I see with gold. Until you get up to the range of $10K per coin, all gold is common. Its expensive, but its common. Take the key Indian Quarter Eagle, the 1911-D. In AU-58, the coin is on the order of $5,500. I've seen at least a dozen go at auction last year and at least another half dozen in dealer inventories. $5500 and I could have bought it 15x over. I was also searching for a 1798 small eagle dollar in VF/XF which is on the order of the same value (a couple thousand more) and it took me all of 2016 to find one I liked. There were maybe 2 in dealer inventories and weren't nice. Thats what I consider a rare coin. I finally found one I liked at the FUN auction in January 2017.

If you collect common coins, the hobby will be more about saving money until you buy. Finding the coins will be trivial because they are common. That doesn't seem like a whole lot of fun to me.
