*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ****** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Titles are important! ***While doing some remodeling in my house I discovered some coins. About 1/2 the coins are in those blue books. Between the pages and all over the coins there appears to be some sort of mold. How should I handle these coins? At present I can't read some of the dates because of the dirt/mold that covers them.Any help would be most appreciated.

I'm glad you came here to ask! Handle the coins by the edges only and give them a soak in PURE acetone (not nail polish remover). That should get the worst off and you may need to repeat the process. This should be done outdoors. Please wait until someone confirms this.

To start off, I think that I would get a mask or a ventilator and, and outside with plenty of fresh air I would pop the coins into bactericidal soap and put the holders into the garbage. After a soaking to destroy any micro-organisms, then dry off the coins without rubbing them.

to CCF. Do not use soap! Use pure acetone and toss the folders. Post before and after pics. John 1

WOW! A mini small treasure. I pretty much agree with what everyone has said. Take them outside & get up wind and pop them out & soak them. Pictures of all the binders would be great. Were did you find them? attic, basement, wall. Do you know who they belonged to? What was the newest coin in the batch?

I agree with pure acetone bath. Also, the mask would be a good idea when removing them from the folders. You never know what kind of stuff will get kicked up into the air you're breathing.

Just adding my vote for 100% pure acetone. You can get it at your local hardware store or any of the big home improvement stores. Please post more pics a well as details on how you ran across them!

When they are removed, the reverses will probably be blue in color from the blue folder they were in. If they are too bad they can be sold as silver prices.
