Here's one of my favorite, counterstamped Two Cent Pieces ...

Here are my database notes in caps, being more visible therein ...

JOHN ZETTLER APPEARS IN THE 1872 NY CITY DIRECTORY WHICH SIMPLY CITES "GUNS" AT 88 NORFOLK. HE'S LISTED AS A GUNSMITH IN NY COUNTY IN THE 1850 MERCANTILE DIRECTORY; APPARENTLY THEN AT 71 ALLEN. IN 1877, HE'S LISTED AS A PLUMBER. JOHN ENLISTED IN THE THIRD INFANTRY, CO. H ON 7-13-1863. HE WAS APPOINTED AN ARTIFICER OR WEAPONS CRAFTSMAN IN THE FIELD AND MUSTERED OUT IN WASHINGTON, DC ON 8-22-1865. BORN ABOUT 1830, HE CAME TO THE USA FROM MARBURG, GERMANY IN 1837. HE MADE A PEPPERBOX PISTOL FOR AN INVENTOR THAT WAS LATER PATENTED BY BLUNT & SYMS. A MARK, IDENTICAL TO THIS C/S, APPEARS ON AN 1850's ERA LARGE BORE RIFLE. BRUNK LISTS BUT THIS ONE AND RULAU NONE. THE ZETTLER BROS. WERE AT 134 BOWERY IN 1868. AFTERWARDS, THEY WERE AT 224 BOWERY TO 1886.

The OP had me scrambling for my Red Book.
I was pretty sure there were no business or proof strikes in 1863.
Thanks to "numismatic_student" the option of it being a pattern cleared that up.

I have a full business strike date set ranging from VF-25 to MS-65BN.
The 1864 Small Date is VF-25.
The 1872 is AU-50.
