From those images I am in the MS66 camp.
This is also one of my favourite Canadian Dollar designs and what a nicely struck example this one is

Trying to learn or understand MS grading.

What are you guys seeing that would differentiate between an MS 65 and MS 66?

I'm looking at the obv fields and then the hair.
The fields look soft and frosty and perfectly untouched..

The hair also show absolutely no fine contacts..
It a bit of a crap-shoot between web pics and 65 or 66.

If I'm wrong it might be because of the shadow or the possible touches on the cheek and eyebrow..

I also check the rims for near perfection..

You have to remember that there were a lot of well protected 49's that left the mint..when compared to all of the other years in that series..

MS65 is my vote. I would hope that the number of 49's offered in special packaging that year would not influence the grade today, though.
