Does anyone know why someone would drill holes on a 1953 skint half dollar coin?

Can a BB gun do this to a coin?

The dents were not drilled, they were punched in. You can tell by the outward bumps on the opposite side.
Why would someone do this is anyone's guess.

That sounds like a good explanation for the number of dents and the depth of them on both sides. I'm not seeing a BB gun doing that. Maybe a .22 pellet gun but that's a lot of shooting, finding it, setting it up again...

I do think a BB gun could do this.

Why? As cwb said, who knows, but perhaps it was a bored kid with too much time on his hands one summer vacation as it wound down to a close.

B B gun, did it all the time when I was a kid. Only we used cents, wern't rich enough to have a 50 cent piece. A 22 pellet would not dent silver it would just smash into it.

I'm in the BB gun camp. Did it myself too, just never with a half dollar.

The pump BB guns can get enough pressure to mimic the force of a 22.

I am in the shotgun camp, I have seen and done this myself. Even high-power BB guns would have a hard time doing this type of damage, even into such a soft alloy as silver-copper.

I guess you could get some Franklins, a BB gun and a shotgun. Add a couple of friends a lonely country road and some beer then you have the makings of an official country boys experiment. Also a trip to the emergency room.

Seriously, I showed this coin to my grandson for his opinion, this was his reaction -
