I'm not confident differentiating the pointed 5 variety from the blunt 5 variety. I have a significant number of coins to go through. Is the point of the pointed variety always pronounced or does it vary in degrees or the angle?
I've attached pictures. The first seems to be pointed, the second blunt. The 3rd and 4th pictures show some point but not pronounced like picture one. Does the point have to be as sharp as the first one to be the pointed variety?
If so, the point seems to come closer to the twig (branch) of the maple leaf. Is this an indicator for the pointed variety.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I would concur that the first is pointed, while the others are all blunt. I go by, if I have to ask, it is a blunt, the pointed always stands out.

It would appear that the first pic of your blunt has taken a hit to that part of the five that is blunt. This makes it appear different than the undamaged blunt 5s."

One thing I always look for is the other end of the 5. On the pointed 5, the end is pretty square looking. On the blunt 5, the end flairs out wider toward the 6.

Your first example is square. The other 3 flair out toward the 6.

That's a little hard to explain, I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

This has been very helpful. Phil310, I do see what you mean. Thanks to you all I think I get it and have been able to identify what I have so far. Several variety 1's but no Varuiety 4 yet.
I appreciate your assistance to a beginner such as myself.

The 1985 blunt vs pointed is much easier to tell the difference and cannot be used as a comparison. For the 1965 I draw an imaginary line and if it's well within the lower loop on the 5 than its a pointed.

I borrowed your pictures to demonstrate but I'm not the greatest at photoshop so my angles might be a little off.
