looks like Die Deterioration to me but I am no expert, let's see what they say.

There is also machine damage on the mint mark and the date in the same direction. That is what you are seeing MD.

Maybe damage? The bottom of the eight was scraped off too. I'm more intrigued by e pluribus unum on the reverse. I'm not sure if that's normal, but it looks fat to me.

The epu looks like a Die Deterioration issue. I don't see a die flow pattern on the fields, but the devices look affected.
