i know 64 and back but I hear of new dimes containing silver. as a proof or something. I had a lady at a coin shop today tell me they make a silver dime every year. ive heard so many different things idk what to beleive. every time I try to search it it tells me 64 and back thats it. do they make silver halves newer than 1970 or silver quarters newer than 1964?

Silver Proof Sets have been available since 1992 in addition to the annual cupronickel clad proof set. The dime, quarter, and half dollar are 90% silver and match the pre-1965 standards.

The mint will periodically issue 40% silver proofs and even special mint sets for the business strike ones too. I don't know where to send you for a complete list, but I might be able to give some examples: 1976 bicentennial silver proof 3 piece mint set (quarter, half, dollar) and 1976 bicentennial silver uncirculated 3 piece mint set. I personally know about those because I have them. There were also the so called blue and brown Eisenhower dollar packs. The blue was uncirculated and the brown was proof, both 40% silver.

I found this quote from a coin auction website.

Quote:
In 1982, the U.S. Mint, begin minting 90% silver commemorative coins, and in 1992 they begin production of proof sets with 90% silver Kennedy half dollar, Washington quarter, and Roosevelt dimes. 90% silver proof sets and commemorative coins are still being minted in the present, since 1995.

Biokemist and Batboy are right: 90% silver until 1964, 40% in halves until 1970 (Plus some 1976 S halves), 90% silver proofs starting 1992 (but there are also clad proofs in those years).

For planchet error coins, 40% halves are confirmed in 1971 and 1977.

I hope all that does not sound to confusing.

This is a good example where having a RedBook, even a older one
will help.

If your talking just dimes.

1964 and older.
1992 the mint started offering silver proof sets, so there
are silver proof dimes every year since 1992.

Also the March of Dimes commemorative set has two silver dimes.

As posted above there are both silver and clad proof sets.
they came is different colored boxes and inserts

1992 through 1998 were in black

1999 through 2009 silver proof sets were red (clad was blue)

Another tip to tell if a coin is silver is to look at the edge. If there is a copper band around the coin, then it is not silver.
