I collect both 40% halves and dollars but only in 66 or better grade. Beautiful coins.

I wouldn't bother with either for the silver content alone. I'd rather buy a sterling dinner spoon.

Yes here in the states it's completely legal to refine 40 and 90% silver coin

Thanks' for that
I could be wrong But I would imagine that the refining costs for the 40% coins would be higher than it would be for the 90% coins because of the different Silver yields.
IF this is the case then that extra cost would have to be taken into account when buying the 40% coins I would think.

Hello,
Back in 2011 when silver was nipping at the $50 mark every johnny come lately wanted every thing silver even your 40% Kennedy halves and those dirty 35% Jefferson nickels. People on a budget could get in the game with purchasing those red headed freckle face step children I just mentioned. I buy them only at a good price to melt and hold while using capital I don't mind not seeing for some time. I'm the sort of stacker that buys and holds. Just saying how I go at stacking the dirty silver, but might not be your cup of tea.

I don't go out of my way to look for them, but if the price is right, I'll buy.

Thanks for the responses folks! The 40% silver halves mentioned in my opening post were purchased at 70% of melt so I think I did fairly well.

Back in the day I used to sell 40 1/2's at 90% of spot bought at 80% of spot. Little bit more for 40% IKes and Quarters.

Couldn't give away 40% halves until about 2010 on the run-up. 70% of melt today is about right, IF you can find a buyer.

Due to discount it was said these were good for beginner stackers, you get more silver for your money. I've heard preppers like 40% and I'm sure 90% as well. The 40% seem to have fallen out of popularity lately and I'm not seeing many for sale which means they are collecting dust for right now. 90% sales seem to be fairly brisk as the premiums seem to be somewhat more fair when prices are increasing as I tend to think that dealers can get good deals on larger lots and flip them quicker on the upswing, which people tend to buy more when they see prices going up (lost opportunity theory or something) And even the 90% has different premium price points, dimes are not as popular as quarters, quarters as halves, halves as dollars, where the cheapest .999 can usually be had somewhere for .49-.79 over spot.
