Recently purchased a small quantity of 40% silver Kennedy halves at a decent price back of spot melt. I know a lot of stackers don't like them but at what point would you consider them if cheap enough? Thanks, Joe Edited by Joe2007 02/07/2017 8:05 pm

I wouldn't buy regardless of price.

I usually sell at $1.50 - $1.75.

I would buy them as long as they were under melt price.

I normally buy when they're low and close to or under melt. I can normally sell them for a very slight premium, but they won't get you the extra money 90% silver will.

Under $1.25 each, and I probably wouldn't consider $1 each. They are dirty, not worth keeping, not collectible, and are very low in purity.
In regards to STACKING...... You must have .999 square-edged bars to be considered a stacker. Round non-bullion is not worth the space in the vault! Sorry for yelling :)

I agree with Libertad, too dirty. Even the Hunts didn't want them. Tried to sell several rolls on Craigslist, add was stagnant for a month. Settled for 70% melt.

I don't really stack. If I see an auction for 40% or 90% I might bid, but not above spot price including shipping. I have $10 of 40% KHD and $10 of 90% KHD arriving in the next day or two. The 40% were $9 below spot shipped, and the 90% were $15 below spot shipped.

Is it possible/legal to get 40% or 90% halves refined ?

@Trout
Yes here in the states it's completely legal to refine 40 and 90% silver coin.

I understand what Joe2007 is getting at ... Most everything has a price point where it makes it a good deal. Of course 40% and War Nickels are not as popular, but would you pay face if you knew you could sell them at two or three times face? I do not seek out 40% or War Nickels .. but if I am buying a collection I check what local shops are paying and try to purchase 10% back of that. Depending on what silver is doing, I might flip them right away .. of if silver is trending up I will hold on to them until something else I want comes along.

Last year I sold some for 4 x face at a coin show, but I'm not sure I could do so again.

I sold at 3.5x at a coin show this year. They just aren't selling at my DCC auctions below melt.
