When I first seen this coin I thought it was just a PMD strike, But you can still see the hair line under where the strike would be. Then there is also something happening inside the hair line. SO here it is!

I would agree, But like I said the hair line is still visibly under where the strike occurred. If this was a strike the hair line would be removed completely. Please look at pic #4.

Are you sure its not a foreign substance on the surface on the coin? Thanks, Doug.

To me, it appears that it got minted normally, then took a hit from the east with metal being displaced to the west.

I did rub it with a toothpick and nothing moved. So I do believe it is part of the coin.

If not from a hit then possible lamination problem. Kinda looks like the small piece of delaminated metal flipped up and was then pushed over as it has the same shape as the dished out part.

He took a big hit. Even the G and O was affected as well as the rim in that area .

Either damage, or a lamination issue.

x2 on what Mark said. Hit or lam. If it was a lamination issue, you'd be able to poke it off with the toothpick, so I'm going with hit.

Not trying to sound like a broken record, But what would also cause the rest of the top of the hair issues? Look I know this isn't an error coin, But I like to know the process into how things happen. When I look at this I can't say it's a strike because of the wide range, the differences between the damage, and the hair line still present under the supposed strike.

This looks like a retained lamination.

It looks like an attached peel moved to the left on the field. It looks like ribbons on that area.

I thought retained lamination at first, but OP said it didn't move when he poked it. The shape is right. About 45 degree ccw rotation from the base.

It's a lam. It starts at God and continues across the top of the hair. That piece has peeled back to the west.
