A friend was showing me this coin today. He is planning on sending it
into PCGS. He was asking me what I thought it would grade.

Of course I don't see to many early U.S. Gold coins.

The coin looks better than my pictures show. Holding the iPad over the coin,
taking picture through slab does not work that good for me.

Any opinions?

It almost looks cleaned to me... I'm not 100% sure though.

It looks cleaned to me also, but you can't be 100% sure of that from this photo. It looks as if it might have been wiped on the upper part of the obverse and reverse. The detail in the eagle's neck is not consistent with the rest of the detail, and does not look like normal wear for this type. The whole slab photo of the obverse makes this coin look like it's been worked on and would not get a straight grade from PCGS.

I can't tell you what to do from this photo. If the coin gets a straight PCGS grade, that would be coup. If it gets a details grade, that might be a break even situation.

The hairlines indicate that the coin has been aggressively rubbed with some type of abrasive solution. I don't know why ICG gave it a straight grade, but if you submitted it to PCGS or NGS you would most likely get an AU Details-Improperly Cleaned.

Tend to agree. Certainly the drapery area looks odd.

I am thinking I should not have posted these pictures.
Bad lighting and glare on the slab are not sowing what
the coin is really like.

A few collectors looked at it ..in the LCS. None thought
it might be cleaned.

My friend has a Free cross over at PCGS. He can list a grade
that if is does not make it they will not crack it out.

It is interesting to me, I see what you all are saying about
the coin now. But when having the coin in hand and looking at
the pictures it is somehow different.

There is obvious wear on Liberty's cheek, cap, and drapery. On the reverse the eagle's neck and left (facing) wing and the rim from 2:00 to 3:00 seem worn; as billjones says, this seems like an unusual wear pattern. I don't see this coin as aggressively cleaned.

PCGS might give it a straight grade but they might balk at crossing this coin at AU-50. If XF-45 were listed as the minimum grade the chance of getting it into PCGS plastic will I think be improved.

Could make AU, not sure if cleaned or not. Looks like some original luster remaining.

I don't think it would hurt to cross over, might just be the pictures going through the slab. The benefit outweigh the loss in this case if it come back as AU-deatil.

My 1809/8 $5 sure looks like it was harshly cleaned, with hairlines all over, and not a hint of toning. It's so shiny, I was never able to get a decent pic of it, using techniques from a couple of years ago.

However, it did get a straight AU53 grade from NGC, long ago. It may have a bit less wear than yours, but your pics may be emphasizing the wear. Perhaps the TPGs were/are lenient about cleaning on early gold

Now that I've had a chance to see the pictures on my desktop and not just my iPad, I don't think that this coin will cross at PCGS at all. It's been wiped and cleaned. It will be an "AU details" coin.

Sharpness is XF-45 to 50, appears to have been cleaned. That's based on the images, and I do not trust images.

Cleaned, still a great example of early US gold.
If I'm buying, I'd call it XF-45.

Although it could possibly be a combination of bad lighting and photography, but it looks like it has been wiped or aggressively cleaned, unfortunately.
