GEM BU? I can't believe a dealer is so ignorant as to use that description on this coin. He must be an
ebay seller? LOL Listen, that term "BU" is so misused with Lincolns in makes me sick. BU applys ONLY to fully red coins with outstanding, original luster. Use of the term on a coin with even the slightest brown is incorrect IMO. Now, the term "GEM": From my readings, that applies ONLY to coins MS65 and greater, MS60-64 is CHOICE.
Now, for this coin, it's 100% an AU IMHO. It's an odd Lincoln because the obverse wear is MUCH greater than than the reverse. It must have spent a lot of time face down sliding around on a dashboard or something? The obverse is EF45-AU50. The reverse is excellent, MS63 or so. However, the wear on the hair above the ear is so high, I'm going to give this a net grade of AU50-AU53.
Sorry, but there's no way this is an MS grade coin UNLESS there was a lot of "scratchiness" in the shoulder that would indicate a weaker strike on the portrait....and I don't see it. The only other possiblilty would be an improperly annealed planchet that was so hard the strike didn't take on the design high points. I'd have to see it in person to judge that. Nonetheless, it's a very nice 1910!
