Purchased this today. The coin has an obvious problem. It is weakly struck on the right side both in the obverse and reverse. Looks like an early die state coin looking at the strike in the breast feathers. Many of the early 1857 FECs had issues with the metal where the alloy wasn't mixing properly and the thickness of the planchet wasn't uniform. Some planchets were thin in areas, and some FECs are MS with the date entirely missing because the die could not catch onto any metal to make an impression. I suspect this may be a thin planchet coin, and I will examine it when I have it in hand, but may not be able to see the edge properly in the holder. Ultimately these striking issues caused the end of this coin series after two years and gave way to the beloved indian head design.

For its faults, the price was attractive enough to scoop up. Anyhow, as always, your thoughts about grade and its problems as you see them appreciated. TPG grade and price paid in 48 hrs as usual. Thanks!

I see no wear on this coin and I don't think the breast feathers could be brought up any higher. I'd grade it at MS-61 but wouldn't be surprised to see it in an AU-58 holder doubtful it would go any lower since the breast is struck up. I think you'll like this coin once in hand.

FE were often struck weakly in the tail--but this is a little more than most I've seen, even affecting the rim. Too bad you can't weight it, because I wonder if the planchet has a slight taper--or just poor die alignment. I'm not seeing any wear in the highpoints, I'll say 60-62 from the pics.

I was watching this coin. You got the coin for a nice price. I did not bid on the coin because I could not get past the poor strike and the lack of details in the tail feathers.

Thank you for not bidding. Could you share what you personally graded the coin at without prematurely revealing the TPG grade?

I would say MS-60 or 61.

I just had an 1857 come back from NGC as AU-58 that had the slightest lighter copper color to some of the breast feathers. I don't see that on your coin.

I cannot see the luster very well, but I see no wear. Low MS.

MS61, misaligned dies resulting in uneven strike? Not my cup of tea but if you got at a good price then well done.

Paid $256. CDN wholesale says $260, but extensive auction records all show prices $300 and above. Happy with the price and the coin. Looking forward to having in hand later this week.
