As many of you know I am assembling a "historical Figures" collection. This coin is my latest addition to that collection. It is a lovely Gros Tournois of Louis IX. I have been looking for a decent one of these for a few months. This one appeared and I grabbed it. Louis IX was canonized and is now known as St. Louis. This coin is much nicer in hand. I really must take some better photos of it. Please post your coins of Louis iX or any related coins. I would love to see them. Edited by orfew 02/26/2017 12:12 am

Lovely coin, orfew. I like the way your purchases are framed around themes. Still thinking about the assassination of Julius Caesar idea? Louis as he appears in front of our art museum here in St. Louis: (travelanguist.com)

Reasonably pleasing coin. Almost all of the design completely struck up, and only a slight amount of clipping.

@orfew, that is a super coin! It looks gorgeous. So often the rim has been shaved well into the fleur de lis. I'd love to post a coin of Louix IX from my collection, but I don't have one. The bulk of my coins of the 13th Century France are feudal rather than royal. None of them specifically reference Louis IX. I do have coins from his father (Phillip II), son (Phillip III), and grandson (Phillip IV). Hmm, maybe I should be thinking about a coin from every French monarch.

@BobL Thanks very much. I really like the photo. As far as the Assassination theme goes, I am just waiting for the right coins to show up in a auction. I really want to be selective with this theme.
@sel_69 Thank you. I have seen examples in better condition, but this one was very pleasing to the eye. As I said above the photo does not do it justice. It really is better in hand.
@Spence Thanks for the kind words. I would like to see your coins of his relatives if you feel like posting them.

very nice coin . I have the same problem as Spence : no coins from St Louis , but two from his family. First his great-grandfather Louis VII 1137-1180 AR denarius , 3th type,20 mm , 1.03 gr , 12 h mint Paris obv: + LUDOVICUS REX , in the middle : FR OCN : Francia Occidentalis rev: + PARISI CIVIS , cross in the middle Duplessy146 Philippe IV : 1285-1314 Gros tournois à l'O rond : gros tournois with the O circular : the O of the word Turonus Paris mint , 23.6 mm , 3,29 gr , 12 h. Duplessy 213f obv:+BHDICT:SIT:HOME:DHI:NRI:DEI:IHV.XRI: Benedictum sit nomen Domini nostri Dei Iesu Christi. In the middle a cross, surrounded by the king's name : + PHILIPPUS REX rev : castle surrounded by : TURONUS CIVIS and 12 lilies :symbol for 12 deniers = 1/20 livre .The top lily has 2 points. The name Philippus with two P = Philippe IV , with 1 P = his father Philippe III. albert

Thanks for posting photos of these coins. They are very nice. I especially like the Phillipe IV.
On another note, I visited Belgium a couple of years ago. I had a wonderful time. The people were very nice and the beer was fantastic. As a Canadian I had to visit the WWI sites. I will never forget this trip.

@orfew Thank you for your nice comment.I am happy Belgium pleased you.Often ,I am thinking that non Belgian people likes Belgium more than the Belgians , although Caesar wrote in his De Bello Gallico that : horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae. <if ever you come back here , send me a mail, you -and the CCF- are always welcome .albert

Quote: I would like to see your coins of his relatives if you feel like posting them. Ok, I'll start off with a couple coins from his ancestors. Then, I can follow this up with a few coins from his progeny. Here is a denier of King Phillip I (the amorous) dated between 1060 and 1108 AD and minted at Orleans. I believe that he is the great-great-great-great grandfather of Louis IX. The attribution is DuPlessy 50. Skipping forward multiple generations, here is a denier parisis of King Phillip II (the august) dated between 1180 and 1223 AD and minted at Arras. He is the grandfather of Louis IX. The attribution is DuPlessy 168 and Roberts 2562.

Thanks for posting these great coins. Is the Phillipe II a rare coin? I was told by someone on another board that his coins are hard to find.

Quote: Is the Phillipe II a rare coin? Yes I guess they are medium rare. I don't see one for sale at the moment on vcoins. I picked up this one a couple years ago from a French dealer I think.
