It's way too big to be a chip. Although, it may be a plating bubble waiting to burst. If you press on it with a toothpick, does it give? If so, it's a plating bubble from zinc rot underneath. If it's solid, then you may have something. Edit: That would be a prime place for underlying zinc rot caused by splitting of the thin copper layer around the date and mintmark, so I'm leaning toward that. Zinc rot is a dustlike substance that if contained, could harden the underneath some. What usually happens is like a boil, once the outer layer is removed, the yuck comes out leaving a hole. Know you guys have seen zinc rot holes and edge deterioration on zincoln before! Report this Post to the Staff
