What are your thoughts on a grade for this 1959 Jefferson nickel. I was thinking around F-50. On the reverse (Monticello side), what is up with all the extra metal on the letters? The words 'United States of America' have it, as well as 'Five Cents'. (It might be normal, I'm not good with American coins ) Edited by True_Numismatist 03/07/2017 1:15 pm

It looks to me like, some time in the distant past, it took a whack where I have indicated below. So, since it has damage, the best you can "hope for" is a "details" grade...

I'm at VF35 on this one. the reverse is little weak in the strike but the obverse looks XF40. the top of the portico is still separated from the columns so I grade the reverse VF25 and therefore my net grade of VF35

I'd like to see your grading scale! F...50...? The actual grade would be G8- F10, details (damaged). The worth is $.05. Hope you weren't thinking of having it ...slabbed?

Shoot that grading scale. Make sure it is dead. Once more in the head to be certain.

Sorry, you're WAY off on the grade....that's not even a Sheldon scale. VG-8 at best IMO. Not worth submitting to a TPG.

I guess you didn't note my sarcasm. Quote: I was going to get it slabbed. I already sent it off to ANACS.
My grading scale for F-50 is: clear strike, with no visible wear. Possibly some scratches. As I said, I dont know what a 'mint' American coin looks like, so I just assumed F-50. Turns out a Google search proved me wrong. The Monticello should not be worn smooth!

Keep searching! To this day, I still pull not only UNC, but gem pieces of the'59. from a box.
