ANANDA dynasty A minor dynasty known as "Ananda dynasty" ruled in Karnaka with Banavasi as their capital. They ruled between 200 and 300.AD. They were contemporaries and related to the Satavahanas. Their coins have come to light from and around Banavasi area recently. Chutukulananda, Mudananda, Mahananda, Sivaskanda nagasree and Sivalananda are the names known of this dynasty. Very little is known about them. Whatever we know is from some edicts and their coins.
Coins were struck in lead. They have thick flan and bear the name of the ruler in Brahmi script and an arched hill on the obverse. Reverse shows multiple symbols like "tree in railing", "Nandipada" and "Swastika". These coins are very boldly struck. Ananda dynasty is an interesting chapter in South Indian history.MUDANANDA Edited by drnsreedhar 03/13/2017 03:20 am

Here is my lead coin from what I believe is this time period, although I had it listed as "The Deccan" rather than Ananda Dynasty. It has the same six-arched hill on the obv and railed tree on the rev. The inscription on the obv seems to match Rajno Mudanandasa, but I would be interested in your opinion as to whether I have this correct. Thx!

Ok great, so then it sounds like The Deccan and Ananda Dynasty are synonymous.

No,Spence. Deccan is the name of a town in the state of Andhrapradesh and there is a plateau by that name. Banavasi and Deccan are about 350Kms apart. That plateau happens to be a very vast area to the East of the Western Ghats and includes land that once was Bahmani Sultanate etc. Regarding Ananda dynasty, the land they ruled is called "Kuntala". Kuntala is mentioned in the ancient epochs as "Kuntala desa" meaning Kuntala country. Wikipedia says "The Kuntala country is an ancient Indian political region that probably included the western Deccan and some parts of southern Karnataka (erstwhile north Mysore)". So Ananda dynasty means the dynasty that ruled over Kundala desa which lay partly in the Western parts of Deccan Plateau and partly in Southern Karnataka. It is worth to note that Kadambas of Banavasi came after the Ananda (Chutu) dynasty. They were related also. Wikipedia, in the article on Kadamba dynasty says "Inscriptions in Sanskrit and Kannada are the main sources of the Kadamba history. The Talagunda, Gundanur, Chandravalli, Halasi and Halmidi inscription are some of the important inscriptions that throw light on this ancient ruling family of Karnataka. They belonged to the Manavya Gotra and were Haritiputras (lineage), which connects them to the native Chutus of Banavasi, a feudatory of the Satavahana empire".
