One light please. Micro photos work better with just one light source. I think I see light in all four directions on this one. Light and shadows make an image. Too much light removes what is really going on with a coin.

I use a book like as my main primary light source. It has a 14V bulb. Instead of the normal 6V, system, I bumped it up to 12V. Also having the right diffusion prevents the white light glare from happening. Also I use pieces of paper to remove secondary sources from adding glare to the images. I use the light in a frosted plastic tube to cut the glare. I use this setup for micro images.

For full coin shots I use a different setup. Here is what my Micro images look like:

Note the differences? There is enough light, but not drowned in too much light. One light source will give the needed light and shadows. Taken at the right angle to show what you want us to see. Let the light fall over the device and not show a spot light on the area you want to show. If this happens we just see glare in that location and not what you want us to see. So sometimes you need to take images at 180 degree difference of lighting to let the light fall over the device, showing shadow to enhance the shot you want us to see.
Note the lack of glare on the image? Just light and darkness make a better image. Glare covers what I need to see and multiple light sources makes light come around the corner of an image, making it hard to tell if something is there or nothing is there. (I f I created a thread of all the images I have taken, it would be thousands of images. Your eyes would get tired of them all)

I am suggesting you use only a hand held LED light. That is what I use when I use my USB scope to take and post pics.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was getting a bit worried that maybe the discussion about getting better photos implied that what I was seeing as a DD was not. I'll play around with getting some better lighting, although it might not be in the cards at the moment. =]

The die scratches are the clincher for me. But without knowing the die number, I was lost because the images we no help to me.
