Would this be considered a "Black Beauty". The 1948 nickel is definitely darker. I purchased this set for extremely inexpensive and this nickel has been standing out.

Yes I bet those black lines would come right off with a light swab of a Q tip with acetone on it.
I like this one.

Copper nickel coins always black, when heated to red heat and then dropped into cold water.
The black is permanent, is is not able to be swabbed off.

Try it for yourself! You will always get curious dark expressions on the faces of checkout chicks!

Lots of fun!

Those black marks are on the plastic not the coin. For the other responses, thank you for the feedback. Why is this not a black beauty? How can I tell in the future?

I am not sure what the earliest date is for black beauty nickels.
Digging into some Jefferson nickel books might come up
with a answer.
I don't think I have heard of one as early as 1948.

From pictures it is hard to tell, but I would be leaning towards
the nickel posted to not being a black beauty.

For comparison.
