I sent in a nice AU 1828 Classic Head Half Cent to NGC for grading. They sent me an email stating this coin is a candidate for conservation because of residue. I said great, might even increase eye appeal and value. Just got the results back and it was Body Bagged (Burnished). Wouldn't you think they would know this before they conserved it. I don't have the coin back yet, but the NGC picture looks like the coin has a sheen to it now. What do you think happened here.

I don't have the coin back yet for photos. My question would be...Wouldn't they know it was burnished before they conserved it. I thought it was a slam dunk for an AU grade.

The layer of whatever may have hidden the burnishing...
However, your story makes me reticent... I have a Proof65 1936 mercury in an NGC holder... But it is dark as sin... Inky... I wanted to send it in to ncs for conservation, but if it gets the unc details slab, I'm out 80% of my investment...

It would not be the first time doctored coins have been "dirtied up" to hide the alterations, such as pastes/creams to artificially darken cleaned copper, certain chemicals to dull artificially shiny finishes, axle grease to "gunk up" crevices and parts of the design and make it look uncleaned, etc. New owner doesn't find out until they have it conserved and all of the previous hackery is revealed.

I got burned once with a copper coin that had some verdigris in the protected areas. The seller had rubbed olive oil into the coin which made the verdigris appear dark brown. When I dipped the coin in acetone to conserve it, all the olive oil dissolved away and the bright green crud became obvious.

Is it bodybagged or slabbed as details? Now that they are slabbing most everything unless it is fake or has active PVC contamination I would have though it would come back as a details coin.
