I recently bought nearly 100 silver proof dimes from my local coin shop.

Two dimes out of the 100 are displaying odd colors. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? And if normal, do the colors lower or raise the value of the coin?

In the photo of three dimes together, the one on top doesn't have any color. I only added it to show contrast between color and no color.

The photos of the one with color on the face really don't do it any justice. It has beautiful rainbow colors on it.

The photo of the pile of dimes appear to have color but they are all standard mirror finish silver proofs.

Its called toning, some do pay extra for it, which in my opinion is silly as it can be created artificially. It is the results of certain atmospheric conditions the coins are exposed to You will find it on silver rounds, art bars and the ASE's

In the hobby its called toning. Outside of the hobby its called tarnish. In technical terms it is chemically induced surface corrosion.

And although some of the coloring can be beautiful, I cannot help but think the whole concept of marketing coins as being "toned" started as a sales gimmick.

Getting off the toning question; Proof coins are not supposed to be thrown on a surface like that mixing with other proof coins . by the time you holder these Dimes they will have been subject to hits and dings .

artarr!

Very nice lot of silver dimes.
Toning is pretty common with 90% silver coins of all types. As T-Bop mentioned care should be taken with any proof coins so they stay pristine. Otherwise they become an "impaired proof" and loose collectors appeal.
