Hi all;

I have recently taken over my father's coin collection after his passing, and I am planning on continuing it. The big part of this, of course, is going through his collection and estimating the grade of each coin as best I can. To get me started, I would appreciate some opinions on the following 1935 Voyageur Silver Dollar he bought via the "First Commemorative Mint". It is in a hard plastic case - I did not take the coin out so there maybe some reflection in the pictures. What do you think the grade of this coin is? Any thoughts would help and give me a base to assess the rest of his silver dollars.

Thanks!

Would have been easier to grade if raw hand held, examined with a 10x loupe, just as the TPGraders do.

Only 3x on my screen, to be seen through plastic. As I see it,
somewhere between AU58 and MS62. Nice coin.

From reading topics on TPG grading on other sites a 5x loupe is used. (David Hall) 10x loupe would be used
for obscure die varities, Counterfeit Detection,etc. Near sighted graders often do not use a loupe at all,unless
grading the smallest of coins.

I don't think there's any way to judge this without knowing what apparent defects are on the holder.

Thanks all for the feedback - much appreciated and very helpful.

This came from a silver dollar subscription my father had through "First Commemorative Mint". He bought about 15 silver dollars through this subscription; each comes in a hard case and a mini binder with some literature attached. No grading, of course. Not sure if FCM did anything to the coins beforehand.

He also bought a lot of proof sets and others coins from the RCM - these a lot easier to classify.

The journey continues!
