Cover your eyes, this gets ugly! Zinc rot everywhere, and an inconvenient spot on the third digit of the date. There will be no looking at the reverse here -- it's undoubtedly a WAM. Now is it 1989 or 1999? Why?

(A post for fun. It'll get us looking at subtle differences in a coin's design over the years. I suspect the cent people will figure it out right away.)

Based on the obverse, my hunch is...it was a 1999.

It is the ultra-rare 1909 LMC That does look like the date, right?

I'm thinking it is a 1999. But, regrettably, I don't know the design differences.

I was just looking at what I saw as differences in the upper curl of the nines and ending-point proximity to the leg.

How do you know it's not a 1989?

Your coin is from 1989. I'm not sure of the year it changed but the design of the bow tie is different on a 1999 cent.

Thanks for the link, Doug. I didn't realize there were so many obverse design varieties as compared to the reverse die varieties.

I didn't have this info last night, but I did determine that it is in fact a 1989 zincoln. The points I observed were the difference in bowtie, chin, back of neck, brow line, and the more prim appearance of Lincoln's jacket in the 1999 obverse die. I am a little bummed that I was able to tell for sure because that means I can't in good conscience list "World's ugliest 1999 WAM Lincoln Cent?" on ebay and see the response in traffic and (maybe) bids.

[edit] Oh, also the neck. Between 1989 and 1999, Lincoln seems to have lost his Adam's apple.

Honestly, that's a relief. The worst was seeing a 92-D CAM in that condition.

I understand fully. When I'm looking at a beat up coin, I'm hoping there's nothing special on it, but for some crazy reason I have to look anyway!

If I see anything distracting on a coin, I toss it and don't look at them at all.

I've been trying to speed up my CRH pace, but it's tough getting away from my practice of looking at every single one with a magnifying glass. Noteworthy ones get set aside for a second look, then half the time I don't see what was noteworthy in the first place and I chuck it at that stage.

Coop that's the best way to go. Old habits are hard to break though,, I'll have to try to convince myself I can look at more good coins that way. I'll have to import more coins to do that. I can do that.
I have that same problem too, Druu. I've decided unless it's very obvious, not to set it aside but finish the second look before going to the next coin. I'll always wonder about the ones I've already ended up discarding! lol
