....for the first time. Maybe a bit rash, but a buyer with 0 feedback and their name being "Discover Card," at some Illinois address, just didn't cut it. I called ebay to get ahead of it, and they said since the address was suspicious, I stood a good chance of having any potential negative feedback removed. Oh yea, the coin was a 1986 Double Eagle PCGS MS68 for $1325.

Now buyer sends me a message, and says he really wants to buy the coin. Is there a way to protect myself 100%?

He wants YOU to buy the coin? Not sure what you mean.
I think your first instinct was right - back away from this.

Quote: Now buyer sends me a message, and says he really wants to buy the coin. Too much "March Madness/St Patrick's Day" combined? Actually he probably did you a favor by getting you to cancell the transaction as a 68 at 1325$ should be just a bullion coin value. Not your fault he chose to spend the grading fees.

Quote: yes tracking and full insurance, with signature required.. That goes without saying, but since he was fishy from the beginning, now I'm thinking worst case scenario, he opens package and says it's empty, and that nothing was sent. I really don't want to mess with trying to collect insurance. This guy should have been straight from the beginning, and I probably would have given him the benefit of the doubt, but not now. Not sure if I should answer his ebay message or not. His message states that "he really wants the coin but the order was cancelled." He left his phone number. I'm not sure he knows why it was cancelled or who cancelled it. Well he should have some idea...seeing he used a shady address

You have alerted ebay on his in advance. I doubt you'll have a problem.

You did the right thing. I have cancelled only 2 items in 4 years of selling. Both times I was right but was not 100% sure. When you get the "feeling" something is not right, go with your instincts, especially a high dollar coin like that.

I also agree. I haven't ever sold on ebay but I had a website for a while (not coins) and twice I had "that feeling". On one of the orders I get a message 2 days later someone was using her stolen credit card number and had placed an order with me. I had not shipped it so that saved me from a future headache. The first time I ignored my gut feeling and was hit with a big charge back the next month.

If I ever feel suspicious about an ebay sale, I video tape myself packaging the item.

I think you did the right thing. I cancelled one sale for a bad feeling. After that, the buyer messaged me almost to the point of harassment and I found out they weren't as legit as it had appeared. I'm glad I chose that route.
I guess next time, block buyers with low or no feedback.

I don't think one can block a no feedback bidder. Also, ebayNow has a quick buy option where they generate a onetime User name to allow quick buying. This also allows buyers with Bad feedback profiles to buy.

How about someone like me, hardly ever in many years even bought anything on ebay, now plan on trying to sell some Items, I'm new, have no marks either way. So right off the bat I'm automatically a smuck? Everyone has to start somewhere. As for XavieroftheGreen, I've thought same way, only still pix of items resting in packing medium, now I'll video!
