Need some help with this Kennedy half dollar. There is something different and I can not figure it out. It's like it has a little different color. Help please. Thank you

It's silver. Is that what you mean? The 1964's were made from 90% silver.

No I have about 40 of these and this one is not as shinny as a proof but a different luster than a 64 D. Also has kinda a orange and blackish tint around the edge but not toning.

It looks like a sms but I know that extremely unlikely.

It's 90% silver instead of the 40% 0fm the 65-69's. That's what grandma used to call "tarnish" on her silverware, out came the polish! Now you do know better than to do that to your coins now, don't you?

Whatever~~~ you do, don't clean it. :)

The coin may have just been exposed so something weird which made it tarnish differently.

Die Markers

Obverse

--Every example of the half dollar we have seen except the MS69 example shown under "Finest Known 1964 SMS PCGS Set" shows a small, teardrop-shaped tine of metal drooping from the underside of the 4. (This leads us to believe that the MS69 was among the first struck, or perhaps the very first.) See the closeup (a different coin, pinkish-toned but showing the same marker).
--(Clearly visible with a 16x loupe.) A wispy die crack runs from the left upright of the 1, about three-quarters of the way up (one-quarter below the flag), extending slightly NW into the field out from under the flag.

Reverse

--Die polishing line running diagonally from bottom of middle serif of F in OF to A(MERICA). Also visible in the closeup photo above.
--Prominent NW-SE die polish lines between A, L in HALF. Also visible in the closeup photo.
--Supersharp strike and excellent preservation. Squared-off "railroad rims."

Does yours have these die markers?

Jbedwell,

No harm, it just makes everything flow much better if you add additional thoughts by editing the most current post.

I do it all the time. I'll post, then think of something else, go back and edit, submit changes, then think of something else immediately, go back and edit, post changes again and so on...

Check out those die markers to see if you get any matches to an SMS Kennedy. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Edit: (see! I did it again...) posting multiple one-liners in a row can be seen as artificially increasing your post count. Some of what you can do on this forum, like selling, partly depends on quality post count, so it's important. I hope this helps a little.

Took it to 2 local coin dealers today and both said there was no such coin as a 64 sms. They also said Kennedy's are not a coin they deal in. I was told to collect something else that Kennedy's were a wast of my money. One gentlemen said, I quote " that the problem with your generation, you all think you have rare coins and I don't like wasting my time dealing with it". So I got no answers today.

That is simply a 90% silver half dollar that has tarnished a little and is worth about $6.

If you had the PCGS CoinFacts app on your phone then you could have shown this:

1964-Kennedy-Half-Dollar-Different-Than-My-Others

If someone says," The problem with your generation...", move on. They're not worth dealing with and in this case, lack the knowledge to give an educated opinion.

Your update gets me worked up but I'll refrain. The best thing is to find someone who is willing to work with you.

I can't say whether yours is SMS or normal. I added the only thing I could to help with the die markers.
