The local coin dealer you have come to trust should have known better. Approach him in a very friendly and polite manner, to negotiate to get your money back. NEVER loose your cool.
Perhaps he made a negligent but honest mistake. We are all capable of negligence from time to time, and for this reason, give him the benefit of the doubt for your next deal, provided that he gives you your money back.
You may wish to show him this thread on his computer, so that he can see our opinions.

As noted in this thread, your coin is a counterfeit. Counterfeit from the no no site: OP Coin: These coin are a perfect match. Note the lack of detail in the Liberty ribbon tips on both coins and the crooked denticles at 5 o'clock. The cast bubbles in front of Liberty's face are in the same position.

Thank you all for your insights. I went back to the coin shop today, they returned my money. They were not sure how this Trade dollar got past them. The weight is 26.4g. They are honest guys, no problem with returning the coin. I will continue to deal with them. Thanks to you all I've learned a lot about counterfeit Trade dollars. But for me, I'm looking for a PCGS or NGC slabbed Trade dollar, for my type set.

Wonderful news that you were treated well on the refund AND maintained a good relationship with your dealer.
Wait for a non-S mint, probably 77 or 78, lower mintage with no difference in prices and in NGC or PCGS as you suggest.
Then show us that one!

There are also fake slabs with fake coins in them too. So buy from reputable sellers. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it just might be. Glad you and your coin shop are on good terms after all that.

moxking said: Quote: Look closely at the denticles, folks. If you can't see that it's fake just from that, you need to buy a few cheap counterfeit coins to use as comparison. I absolutely agree with this one. Three or four years ago when they were still selling on ebay I deliberately bought a handful of different denominations and types to educate myself. So far when I see anyone post a question about authenticity on this forum, I have been able to spot the fakes. When you have a fake in hand, or at least study them in hand, you can ID them. Ask you local coin shop if they have any fakes you can side by side compare. My LCS did this for me and that's what inspired me to get other fakes for a positive ID. The TPGs don't have a magic machine that tells them a fake from a real coin. They simply educated themselves and do exactly what any private collector who has taken the time to educate themselves can do. Learning to tell fakes just takes a little bit of homework - and actually is fun to do. When you hold a fake in hand and compare it to the real McCoy, for a lot of the fakes you wonder how it would fool anyone. For the more complicated pieces, things like spaces in the milling on the edge and coin thickness can also come into play before even needing a magnet or scale.

I looks legit. The type 3 'crapping eagle' reverse. Very rare.

Earle42, BINGO! wholeheartedly! I myself have intentionally bought known fake Flowing hair (1804), Seated Lib (1864) and trade (1875S) just to begin studying the "fakeness" of the counterfeit. Mine are quite clearly seen after no more than a few minutes study by the untrained eyes. The "64" is different font style, most all the stars are wrong, whether shape, size, mushyness. Even the sizes are wrong. Then get to weights and...magnet! I do sense more awareness, but if I'm ever financially at a point to invest, will DEFINATELY be TPG, no raw because some fakes can be very good. (See pflexx's "Dark web info!)
