Weight, 2.Some like me before I had a scale used a popsickle stick teeter-totter

Like Druu said, even have to check the 82D small dates since there's just been one copper one found and certified. May be other unknowns out there!

And to think I just bank dumped my old 82 rolls because got tired of saving and needed some cash in the account!

Yep, you need to weigh them.

If you look at enough you can develop an eye for seeing the difference but that will not always work - some will fool you!

The zinc cent should be 2.5g and the copper cent 3.11g give or take.

I bounce the 1982 cents on a counter or wooden table. The copper rings, the zinc thuds. Try it with a cent from before 1982 and a cent from after 1982 to hear the difference.

I think you have to have very good ears to hear the difference. Digital scale is the best way. It also helps you weed out others. I found a badly corroded steelie last week. it was so bad that I only caught it by weight because I thought it was a zinc basket case but weighed a bit heavy. Rust to my eyes looks reddish. Couldn't read the date until I applied a little acid and copper brush. Of course, the magnet was a dead give away but I still had some fun <gasp> cleaning.

Heat it up to 788 deg F?
If it's copper, you'll have a beautifully toned 1982 copper.
If it's a Zincoln, you'll have a puddle.

Flip it with your thumbnail. If it rings until you catch it again, it's copper, but if it just thuds or rings then stops then it's zinc.
