I'm going to the South Shore Coin Club show in Milwaukee this weekend. For once I actually have some money to spend!

While I obviously don't know what I'll find at the show, I'm going with the thought of looking for either a nice AU Capped Bust Half or a mint state Liberty Seated Half.

I'm a type coin collector, so the date isn't important. The Liberty Seated Half would most likely be one with motto on the reverse.

I've done research online and cruised through ebay listings to see where these fall, price-wise, and there is quite a variation. So I thought I'd ask folks what they would consider to be a reasonable price to pay at a show for a TPG slabbed common date Capped Bust Half in AU-55 to AU-58 or a Liberty Seated Half in MS-62 or MS-63.

I'd consider a raw coin, but would need to be sure it is an original piece.

Who knows what I'll find, and I may end up walking out of the show with something else, or nothing at all, but it's probably the one show I'll get to this year so I want to have some informed fun while I'm there.

Thanks for your thoughts on my question.

A quick look on Heritage shows that common-date, certified AU-58 capped bust halves are selling for $550 - $650 including buyers fees. Therefore, you should shoot for an attractive coin in this price range if possible. I'd go for a choice AU-58 over a 55 if you have two otherwise similar coins to choose from.

Common Seated Lib halves like the 1875, 1876, and 1876-S in MS-63 have sold in the $700 range recently; there is little discount if you drop down to MS-62 so I'd stretch for the higher grade. Again, you want choice candidates that are high-end for the grade, with superior eye appeal. Always be willing to pay a bit more for such a coin.

Good luck! Please post any purchases!

Thanks for the responses so far.

This will be my first coin show since the Chicago International Coin Fair last April. I'm looking forward to it.

Look for a dealer named Robert Griffin. Usually decent prices although a bit high.
