Another one from my CRHing. Under a loop it looks like this has a split serif on the MM. Making think I might have found my 1st RPM on my own. But under my camera lens it looks like PMD. Is it? My hunch says it is just PMD so I won't be surprised if that is all it is. Thanks for looking...Mont.

That year is known for a damaged mm. Looks like the mm took a minor hit. John1

That what it looks like in the picture...but only on the MM. The field looks clear around date and MM, but you can see the "Notch" on the MM with the naked eye. The scratches didn't appear till I got it under the camera as well. I think someone did it to fool rookies like me.

That's what we're saying, MC. The notch on the MM is where it took the hit. The MM, when hand punched, was often the highest part of the design and susceptible to taking hits. The angle of the bottom part of the notch is out of sinc with matching up as a D. Sorry, better luck on the next one. Find yourself one with a nice upright bar in the middle of it. That'll get you started off right.

Is is from a damaged punch that creates the mint mark on the die. When the punch bent, it created a lot of dies with the mis-shapened mint marks: That is what you are seeing. It is on several different denominations as well.

I am hoping to put together a set of this broken MM punch on each denomination with clear examples -- I will be happy to share more images as I find them. =D

Quote: Is is from a damaged punch that creates the mint mark on the die. When the punch bent, it created a lot of dies with the mis-shapened mint marks: Thank you coop. Since the fields around the MM don't look like they took a hit, I was wondering if this could be from a damaged punch. You answered my question before I could ask it!

Sorry MC I see now I was incorrect. It looked like damage, I didn't know it was on the punch.

I check on the PCGS site for other denominations that were there, but only found one image of a SBA dollar that looked like a damaged punch issue. This might mean the dollar one may have been part of the punch that just started to deform. We often see it stronger than that on the nickel and cents. But the halves and quarters didn't have them on the examples on the site. (give it time, it maybe that they just didn't have images of these on the site yet).
