but it appears to be details - graffiti. Don't know what is going on in the obverse, but I see a huge JOO lettered on the coin. Is that actually on the coin?

Yeah, I don't know what that is either. It looks like something transferred from being on top of it at some point. The toning is in the shape of two coins resting on it, one at 2 o'clock and one at 8 o'clock.

It is on the coin, not engraved like I have seen before, just a transfer of some sort. Newspaper or a coin roll paper?

This coin is part of an almost complete collection that my great Aunt collected. Not planning on getting these graded or breaking up the set. Just going to pass them along. So not a big deal.

I'm just trying to increase my knowledge.

Maybe someone with knowledge will chime in.

I wouldn't of caught that ns. But it doesn't look like traditional graffiti where it's carved into the coin. It looks like it could have been created from being wrapped in a newspaper with the letters JOO or JOC sitting on the coin in that spot for an extended period of time while being exposed to heat.

Nice observation!

Edit: I should add this will not cause a graffiti-details grade. The cleaning will.

Interesting stain. I think it says "DOL" mirrored (look at the sharp right angle at the bottom of the first letter behind the eye), so it may plausibly have been a coin roll, the negative image created by the ink blocking acids outgassing or leaching from the paper.

This one hasn't been passed around at all. It came right out of my great Aunt's collection blue folder. It hasn't seen the light of day in about 50 years...
