We have here a 1971-D Kennedy half dollar with what appears to be a raised/smashed part of the field and rim (Obverse). On the Reverse it looks to be caved inward, which is leaning me toward a vandalized coin (maybe with a punch of sorts/hammer?). However, the coin still maintains it's round shape, if hit with a hammer it would surely widen that area, right? I have never seen anything like this. I just want others opinions of what may have happened here, so as I continue with CRH and collecting I will have an idea of what to look for. Thanks!

You coin was whacked on the reverse, which is where you're seeing the indentation. The metal was displaced towards the obverse of the coin. the raised area looks like it was forcibly sanded down instead of being worn down over time. The sanding looks like it affected some of JFK's hair as well.
