All right, so this Friday I'm heading off to the one and only coin show I attend each year (the Bay State Coin Show). In years past I have always had gaps in my collection that I've been looking to fill, but as of late last year I've basically hit all my collecting goals. My 7070 album is complete (including a number of extra coins in my digital version of the album) and I finally got the last coin I wanted for my Proof Type Set. So, this year I'm trying to think of what I should spend my yearly coin budget on. Maybe some error coins/notes? Some more pre-1800s coins (I currently have two and really love them)? Or maybe just focus on more upgrades for my 7070 album...

So, here's where I could use some advice. Overall, I am deliriously happy with my 7070 album, especially with all the additions I have made to the digital version. But there are still some coins that I wouldn't mind upgrading if I could get a better example (more eye appeal mostly, not more rare or valuable) for around $200-400 each. I'm not sure this is even possible, though, since upgrading some of these coins at this point might end up running much higher than that.

So please:

My digital 7070 album can be found here.

Here are the coins I'm thinking it might be worth trying to upgrade without breaking the bank:

Classic Head Large Cent (1808-14)
Capped Bust Dime Type I (1809-28)
Capped Bust Quarter Type I (1815-28)
Liberty Seated quarter Motto & Arrows (1873-74)
Liberty Seated Half Motto & Arrows (1873-74)
Shield Nickel (No Rays)

What do you think? Am I likely to find decent upgrades for one or more of these coins at a reasonable price? Are there other coins in my album you think are desperately crying out to be upgraded? Should I just accept what I have and spend my money on something else (and, if so, any suggestions on what that should be)? I'm really wide open to suggestions.

I should say, btw, that I have a budget of around $5000 for all coin purchases this year (not including new stuff from the Mint). So, I theoretically could just buy one really special coin, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that I'd want to pay that much money for right now.

I'm hoping to make it to Bay State this weekend as well, but it might be tricky with school vacation week for the kids. I don't think I have to worry about you buying what I'd be looking for before I make it
Rest in Peace

I'll bet there will be plenty of Classic Head Large cents to choose from but I doubt you'll find a better example than the one you have for $300. You may want to raise that price point a bit for that one or stay with the one you have. The rest of the coins you've targeted I find pleasing, personally.

That actually worked out well for me. In the past, I have felt guilty about taking my son out of school to attend the show, but this year it falls during school vacation week and there's no conflict.

I used to work the Bay State Show in the 80's. It was always a great show. I especially liked Sunday when they let the local dealers in for free to setup.

The advice I had gotten way back then is when you don't have a specific want, go to the show with the goal of buying a nice coin. As you are a type collector, this gives you a wide range to choose from.

Well, I will admit it's tempting to shell out $3000-4000 for, say, a 1916D Mercury dime in VF20 or so. I'm just not sure I have the internal fortitude to do that...

Thanks. But do you think it's possible to upgrade any of the coins I listed for my price range, or am I on a fool's errand?

True, that! Although, finding one I could afford that was actually recognizable might be a bit of a problem...

If I did decide to just get one coin this year, here is my list of coins that I would consider:

Liberty Cap Half Cent (1793-1797)
Flowing Hair Half Dime (1794-95)
Draped Bust Half Dime (1796-97)
Heraldic Eagle Half Dime (1800-1805)
Draped Bust Dime (1796-97)
Heraldic Eagle Dime (1798-1807)
Heraldic Eagle Quarter (1804-07)
Flowing Hair Half Dollar (1794-95)
Mercury Dime (1916D)

If you go to a big show with the goal of buying a nice example of one of the coins from that list, I think you have a good shot at being successful.

My personal pick would be the pre 1800s route. I'm always satisfied when I make a solid purchase of such early dates. I also have a complete 7070 (although not as nice as yours), and it is my favorite book to look through. I'm a mid grade problem free collector, so going with coins that old is still largely feasible. I'm not sure if the early copper bug has bitten you, but, if it does, it can keep you busy for a while. Keep an open mind and buy what ever floats your boat.

Yeah, but narrowing it down to just one will be a real bear. That's why I was originally planning on focusing on upgrades.

My wife shares your opinion, btw. She thinks I should just buy one really nice coin (certified, of course) that is likely to hld or increase value over time rather than "wasting" my money on upgrades to my 7070 album.

Pre 1800s! There is so much history behind each and every coin, not to mention some very beautiful designs.
