I found a 1945 penny today that is reddish in tint(something I've seen many times) but it caught my attention when I dropped in on the table and it made a strange sound that I can't recall having heard from any other wheats I have. it appears to be thinner than the other pennies as well. it's fairly worn but not so much that you can't clearly decipher all the writing. would a thinner planchet make the coin sound different? I'm stumped on this one.

While examing it more, I noticed it is also slightly smaller in diameter than other pennies. Picture included this time, although not great ones.

Yes. Density and mass affect the tone. Generally speaking, a coin with greater mass/density will have a higher tone than the same coin of a lower mass composition (e.g. a silver quarter vs. clad for the same year).

On the opposite side you might see the same thing going on with it there also if it is a tapered planchet.
