I started going through Brian's Variety double die list and pulled the dates of all coins. I haven't found errors listed but I have found similar gashes on Nickels bldg on Presidents face. Some look like a hot gun mark. I did go through one set of coins keeping ones that look uncirulated or least semi uncirulated. I have a large amount of possible errors and I guess what I'm asking is unless they have the exact error listed on Brian's list or if I found error by googling the year should I keep or toss. Example I saw somewhere 2016 nickle and 2015 and 2013 to lines connecting the eyes. I found a gash on the bridge of nose (like from a hot gun) I know I'm asking a stupid question but I'm still working on one set of coins and I have a lot to go through with marks. I already have 4 rolls I'm keeping of semi circulated. 10 rolls to put back moms piggy bank. Now I have about 300 to still check for errors. I just dont want to keep a bunch of nothing. I have posted on here last week maybe someone could go through pics I posted so far and tell me what I should keep. Thanks

The mark on the bridge of the nose is a die clash. What you are describing sounds like damage. Post pics for proper help.

Desiree, my question to you is what started you on these varieties? Some people read these books about making big money on pocket change and think they'll be the next millionaire coin guru. Hope that's not you and that you're truly interested in coin varieties for the sake of collecting, thrill of the hunt, so to speak. Do you WANT to make a set of Jeff nickel varieties? There's the key.

Most varieties, such as Brian's and other venues are really for the "connesuer" (?), those who seem to not "get their fill" of them. I've gotten that way with Lincoln Cent RPM's. Got them setup by date and logged by Coppercoins number scheme. Not so much in nickels and virtually none in other denominations, why, not interested and pennies is a big enough field. Made it my ,"specialty" in numismatics, far from expert, but learning. Give you a big hint, tried selling some duplicate RPM's on an auction site...mine were MS60 uncirculated examples, lots of 5 each. When said and done, on 3 sold lots after expences, made $.10 apiece, 15 coins in flips, labeled, shipping, fees, personal time, gas, it ain't worth it as a moneymaking proposition. And that's for a "recognized" error coin. Seems to work that way for die clashes/breaks, Cuds. Market just isn't there unless its tsome just like us!

I stick mainly with varieties and extreme errors. Other things go back into circulation that are too minor/common for my taste. But I'm an variety specialist.

To understand what legitimate errors are one should understand how the coin is minted.
YouTube offers a number of videos.
I thought this old one was neat. No mention of mintmark punching but when they made that master die. I could imagine how it could be turned ever so slightly to make a doubled die.
Interesting and coffee is only a nickel!
Look at that lady pulling errors near the end. LOL
Hey! you missed one!
